Baby Tenzin Wangdak is an 8 months old baby from Ladakh. Here’s some information from the recent fund raising effort for his surgery on GoFundMe website.
On November 28, 2015 Tenzin Wangtak (8 months old) baby was very sick and rushed to Leh hospital in Ladakh from Changthang (a very remote area in Northern India) in an ambulance. Doctors in Leh were unable to treat the baby and asked to take the baby to Delhi hospital.
The next day, the single mother and the baby flew to Delhi and were admitted to Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Sarita Vihur, Delhi-Mathura Road. Dr. Smita Malhotra diagnosed that the baby has Neonatal Cholestasis.
Dr. Anupam Sibal issued a letter in which he wrote, “This is a case of Chronic Liver Disease with portal hypertension (Biliary Atresia). He needs a liver transplant for survival. The cost of liver transplant is approximately 15 lakhs. The cost of pre transplant evaluation is approximately 1.5 lakh.” Therefore, the total cost of at least 1,650,000 Indian Rupees (US$ 25,000) is required to proceed with the liver transplant to save the baby.
The mother and family is devastated. There is no medical insurance for the baby and there is no way that they could find this large sum of money to save the child. However, the doctor told the mother that there is 90% likely chance of saving the child if matching liver is found and to go through with the liver transplant. Two days later, another child in the same hospital has an extra liver and mother of that child is willing to donate the extra liver to save Tenzin’s life. Doctors performed all necessary tests and found that both blood types matched.
This generous gift from other child gives hope to the desperate single mother and their family to proceed with the surgery. Now the challenge is to raise US$ 25,000 in a week to save the child.
From the Om Charity’s fund, we were able to donate $500.00 towards the baby’s medical expense.
Gen Jamyang Tenzin la is a one of the senior most teacher in the SOS TCV Bylakuppe. He has educated 1000s of students in the past many years and during this difficult time, some of his ex students got together to raise fund for his medical expenses.

Our donation was made via the “GoFundMe.com” page created by one of his student, Pema Lhanang from Chicago.
